8-bit Explosion With the success of the early mass-production microcomputers, such as the Commodore PET 2001, a whole new world upened up. The kit built computers had limited appeal because not everyone had the skills needed to assemble them. Now many new companies began producing 8-bit microcomputers, most based on either the Zilog Z-80, Intel 8080, or MOS 6502 cpus. The Texas Instruments TI-99/4A was actually built around a TMS-9900 16bit CPU.
