Timex-Sinclair 2068
The 2068 was Timex's idea of improving upon the Sinclair Spectrum. It had
both a cartridge port and joystick interfaces built into the machine, as well
as a number of changes in the Spectrum ROM. Unfortunately, these changes
also tended to make the 2068 incompatible with existing Spectrum hardware and
software. It had a total of 72k of memory, 48k of which was RAM and 24k ROM.
Timex pulled the plug on thier computer operations not long after introducing
the 2068, though an arm of Timex in Portugal continued to manufacture and sell
the machines as the TC-2068. The 2068 had quite a stylish silver case, with
the cartridge port hidden under a flip-up cover to the right of the keyboard.
Unfortunately, the 2068 retained the Spectrum's chicklet keyboard, replacing
the rubber keys with hard plastic ones. It also retained Sinclair's single
key entry of keywords and commands into BASIC.
The 2068 would be the third, and last, computer that Timex sold
in the United States prior to shutting down it's computer arm.
It would continue to be manufactured in Portugal as the TC-2068.
The 1000 and 1500 had been manufactured in Portugal, while the 2068 had
been manufactured in Korea.
